- very effective around the house. Good for armadillos, raccoons, deer, hogs, humans, etc. I haven't tested for cars.
- very few false detects.
- you can switch select 4 levels of sensitivity (distance), nighttime only or day & night, speed of object, etc.
- they hold up as well or better than the Dakota MAT sensors (based on the last batch I bought years ago.)
- battery life is great (at least 2 years, just two AA batteries)
- setup is pretty easy... takes about 5 minutes per sensor (mostly fooling with the screws)
- for less than the cost of one Dakota MAT sensor, you can get 4 of these sensors plus a receiver.
Cons:
- they have worked everywhere I have placed them near the house, but they are NOT long-range sensors like the Dakota MAT
- furthermore, you can't attach an external antenna and you can't monitor with an analog (e.g. ham or scanner) radio. You must use their receiver.
- instead of synthesized voice alert ("zone 1", "zone 2", etc.) you have to choose from dozens of cutsie tones for each sensor (from a simple "ding dong" to the Indiana Jones theme song). You quickly learn which tone goes with which zone, but I prefer the synth voice approach.
- I haven't tried to repair one of these sensors, but I suspect that it's harder to do than a MAT sensor. But at the price, I'm a bit more comfortable just throwing away one of these sensors when they break.
- In order to replace the batteries or change a dip switch, you have to remove 4 tiny screws. Not a big deal, but a bit cumbersome. They supply the matching screwdriver.
The range is excellent - I have a unit operating flawlessly over 800 feet from the base unit and the line of sight is obstructed by the foliage of dozens of trees.
Battery life is quite extraordinary. My remote units have gone a full year on a set of batteries. After their first long, sub-zero winter here in Quebec I used a tester on the batteries and they registered like new! The current draw in passive mode must be pretty negligible.
I was initially concerned about how weather-tight the units might be, but after several years of outdoor service there has been absolutely no evidence of moisture penetrating the sensor cases, even after I left off the visor on one of the units.
I've only had one little problem setting up the sensors. Like all motion detectors, the sensors can give false triggers resulting from sunlight striking them. A little bit of trial-and-error resulted in a location/orientation that fixed the problem and still fulfilled the mission.
The product's utility is greatly enhanced by the ability of the base unit to control either powered or un-powered external devices. I use a sensor and the base unit to control a wireless transmitter that activates a siren to protect our blueberry patch from deer - 100% effective. I have a counter attached to another sensor on the driveway that alerts me to trigger events even when I wasn't around.
Importantly, the Guardline system includes the ability to assign sensors to different zones, allowing the user to know exactly which sensor is being activated and also providing a framework for expansion of the system.
Many operational aspects are user controllable via dip-switch set-ups. This gives the user flexibility in adapting the system to different environments, as well as controlling triggered outputs.
One might expect a sophisticated device like this to be difficult to use, but the user's guide is both clear and comprehensive. Anyone who can read can set these units up to get the best performance suited to their particular situation.
Finally, customer service. I've had the Guardline system for several years and I never had any occasion to contact customer service until just recently. After taking down the system for a couple of months I couldn't find the 'wall-wart' power supply when I went to set it up again. Somehow it got mixed in with my extensive collection of wall-warts for obsolete devices and I wasn't sure which one it was. My e-mail to customer service elicited a rapid response which included the offer to send me replacement power supply at no expense. Subsequently I succeeded in identifying the correct power supply so I didn't avail myself of the offer, but it's nice to know that Guardline not only stands behind their product but is also willing to go the extra mile.
Terrific product. User-friendly company. You can't go wrong!
The swivel/ball joint that attaches the sensor to the base plate is still looser than I would prefer, even at max tension setting plus some minor modification in an attempt to tighten it up more. In about 6 weeks, I have had to re-aim the sensor one time so far. I assume a bird landed on top of it, and that was enough weight to cause the sensor to then point down to the ground. It's simple to readjust, but disappointing that you have to do it.
It's been through heavy rain several times, and it's also been in temperatures in the upper 20's so far. In both cases, it worked normally and had no apparent ill affects.
I don't believe that I have gotten any "false" alarms, but it does go off 4 or 5 times a week during the day due to small animals (dogs, cats) and large birds (crows) that wander near the sensor. I imagine that problem will vary from customer to customer depending on each individual situation.
Overall, I'm generally satisfied with it. Some things could be better, but some could be worse.
The information written below was from when I first purchased and received the unit:
I bought this simply as a monitor to let me know when someone is driving up my driveway to my house. I mounted it to a brick column next to my driveway. That location puts the sensor about 200 feet away from the receiver in the house. I've had it in place for less than 1 week, so this review is of initial impressions only, not long-term operation or reliability. It has been in the rain for one day, rest of the time the weather has been mild and fair. So here are my first impressions:
Pros:
Easy operation once setup and installation are complete; set it and forget it.
Decent looking; not a huge eyesore.
Bottom line is, it works. Does what it is supposed to do. Alert goes off every time someone comes up the driveway; has had no false alarms when someone is NOT there.
Cons:
The sensor housing is very soft, light-weight plastic. I would like it better if the housing, which is exposed continually to the weather and direct sunshine, were a little heavier.
It came with an additional "snap-on" sun shield to help shade the sensor "eye," but I did not install it - it's a little difficult to install, but then doesn't seem very secure once it is installed.
The sensor is attached to the mounting plate via a ball joint to allow the sensor to be easily adjusted to point in different directions once the unit is mounted to the post or whatever. There is an adjustment screw to set the tension of that ball mount, to make it harder or easier to adjust. Even at full tension on the adjustment screw, mine was too easy to be moved. I took that ball joint apart and used coarse sandpaper and roughed up both the ball and the socket in order to give it a little more friction so it doesn't turn so easily. That helped some.
The mounting screws need to be larger. They work ok hen mounting the unit onto a perfectly smooth and flat surface (like a board or metal plate) but the mounting screws are too small when mounting to a rough surface like a tree or a brick wall. I drilled out the mounting holes and used larger screws to mount mine to a brick wall.
The sensor has to be dismantled while mounted in place in order to replace the batteries. It would be much better to have some kind of battery access door, or at least some easy or quick disconnect to be able to easily dismount the sensor unit from the mounting base in order to replace the batteries.
The four screws that do hold the sensor together (which have to be removed to replace the batteries) are very small and are in deep recessed holes in the front of the unit (the four black dots in the corners in the photo of the sensor). Those screws are not captive to the cover; they will fall out when they are unscrewed. It would have been simple and easy to make those screws captive so they don't fall out when loosened. My immediate solution is to simply magnetize the end of the supplied small screwdriver so I'm less likely to drop the screws when removing them.
The receiver unit in the house is a little wonkie looking, but I guess there's no accounting for taste. The few controls it has are straightforward, and it's simple to operate. The entire bottom cover pops off to replace the three AAA backup batteries.
The power cord for the inside receiver unit needs to be longer - it's only about 3 feet long.
The operating instructions are quality printed on nice heavy slick paper stock, but the instructions themselves could be a little better. The sensor and receiver units have to be "paired" to each other. I figured it out, but the instructions could be better. I currently only have the one sensor and receiver; additional sensors and receivers can be added and can all work together if desired, but from reading the instructions, I'm not sure that I would know exactly how to do that.
Read some of the other reviews. There are some other noteworthy items, but I just wanted to cover my initial observations in my review. For me, overall a good unit, but could be made a lot better with a few simple changes.
Top reviews from other countries
The items arrived a day earlier than promised, superbly packaged and obviously extremely well made. For example, the four screws that have to be removed from the sensor to fit/replace the batteries are machine screws mating with threaded inserts, far superior and more reliable that the cheap and nasty self-tapping screws into plastic posts that many manufacturers provide. Yes, the screws are small and fiddly (as mentioned in the instructions), but at least Guardline do provide a suitable screwdriver.
The instructions themselves are comprehensive and fully detailed making set-up a doddle. There are numerous customising options that can be tailored to individual requirements/circumstances by adjusting internal DIP switches inside both sensor and receiver. Very versatile.
In summary, I am delighted with this purchase, and fully recommend it. In fact, I was so impressed, that I bought another one the following week for my garage/workshop! Thank you Guardline!
Sound quality is very poor. Expected more for the price I paid. You could probably get something far cheaper with the same facilities. Works ok though and gives me a heads up if anyone is approaching.
I haven't replace the batteries in two units for 3 years !!
They are also easy to adjust for day/night sensitivity and range
Simply the best
